Smith Rock – A Winter Wonder Land
Do you know those days, the ones where you are working too much, snowed in, and feeling a bit of cabin fever?! I have been feeling that quite a bit with all this snow and grey skies. Don’t get me wrong, I love snow! I moved here for Snow! but when it means work gets weird, and takes more time, I dont get many chances to get out and enjoy it.
That changed yesterday when I turned to my husband and said, ‘get on your snow gear, we are going to Smith Rock!’ I have seen the beauty of Smith Rock under snow in photos for years, and I simply couldn’t give up the chance to get out and wander in the majesty!
If you are not local, or have never made it up to Smith Rock, here is a little information from the Oregon Parks Department site: “If you enjoy scenic views of deep river canyons or rock climbing, Smith Rock State Park is the place for you. There are several thousand climbs in the park. More than a thousand are bolted routes. We also offer miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Along your trip through the canyon, you might see golden eagles, prairie falcons, mule deer, river otter and beaver.” (*1) Travel Oregon says, “At Smith Rock, towers of volcanic ash rise like the spires of a cathedral out of the sage and dust of the high desert at the birthplace of American sport climbing. Whether you come for the climb or come to unwind, you’ll see why Smith Rock is one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.” (*2)
For our day, we hiked down to the river, crossed the bridge, and then wandered a bit of the trail along the other side. No dogs on this trip as the depth of the snow would have simply been to much and to cold for our little rescue. By the time we headed back, the sun started to peak out, and I felt very grateful to have such a beautiful escape right in our back yard.
