Fall on the Deschutes River Trail
Some days, as we find ourselves running from new listings to client meetings, we need a quick escape. Bend affords us the ability to do this in so many ways, and yesterday we selected the South Canyon reach of the Deschutes River Trail.
We accessed the trail from what locals call the first street rapids, but the most common access is from Farewell Bend Park. The trail reaches south, through the canyon about one and a half miles, and then crosses the river via a foot bridge to return on the other side for a total trip just over three miles. o 0 (my dogs favorite, a loop rather than an out and back)! Bend Park and Recreation labels the flora along the way so if you are looking for an educational walk with young ones, this is great for that also! The trail is soft soil, and rocks, with moderate grades in some places. Overall, most locals consider this an easy to moderate walk, depending on your fitness level.
Your wander will take you through a variety of environments from a walking bridge, aspen grove, rocky rambles, and river side wide paths. The views of the river are amazing, and if you hit the just right time, you might catch a Kayaker running the rapids in the area. Overall, this trail affords you an escape to nature, right here in the heart of Bend!
In the fall, the population on the trail is light, although you are down in town so you will share the path with runners, walkers and other dog lovers. Bikes are only allowed on a short portion at the start of the west side heading south, and then quickly transition to another route. Keep in mind, much of the trail is in the shadows of the canyon walls, and it will feel colder than the rest of town. At dawn and dusk you will find some of the local fishing enthusiasts on the banks of the river trying their luck.
It took Eric and I about an hour, stopping often to view the seasonal foliage, look for fish in the water, and letting Rhubarb say hello to new friends. This little wander is a great way for you to grab 7500 of your daily step count, feel the blood pump, but still be close to town to get back to the daily business of life. A 5 Star escape in my books!
